Spy vs. Spy Part One
by Gary S. Bekkum
One of the daily tasks I face is burning through hundreds of
email messages to find those few diamonds in the rough offering
potentially new insights into the dark corners of the hidden
world of intelligence and technology.
It has been know for some time that the world of the weird
and strange has
been visited by the denizens of certain three-letter government
agencies,
notably the CIA and the DIA. These days all of the other three
letter types
have more to fear than in the past thanks to newly created
Department of
National Intelligence, the DNI, presently under the hand of John
Negroponte.
From time to time we observe a shaking of the intelligence tree
and the
outing of certain individuals or groups silently watching from
the shadows.
Although they tend to dislike exposing their hidden agendas
beyond the cover
of closely held plausible deniability, they are driven by their
commitment
to protect the national security, and when need presents itself,
they are
more than willing to step up to the plate and take a swing.
It appears that we are now observing a new effort to knock the
ball out of
the park with all the bases loaded. At bat, a well-know but
mostly silent
type operating from a relatively new position of authority.
Caught in the
crossfire, another well known former government agent,
previously tasked
with spinning counter-intelligence involving American citizens.
In the
shadow lies a possible inter-agency rivalry and potential
criminal
investigation.
Alas, I have been gently persuaded to keep the juicy details to
myself, for
the time being anyway. This fish-tale may not be going away
anytime soon.
Threats have been passed, and some fairly high-level parties are
said to
have been briefed about events unfolding behind the scenes. Is
this just
another show and tell affair, or will the action start to get
hot and heavy?
Perhaps it is time to call my well-placed deep background source
that I call
"deep thought."
Stay tuned.
