A SMALL COINCIDENCE IN THE WAR ON TERROR

Most Americans can imagine the heart-pounding race to disarm a nuclear weapon seconds before it detonates and levels a major city.

The key to the above scenario requires locating the nuclear weapon in time. To that end, American authorities are willing to employ almost any means of detection, from both technological and human sources.

It remains a little known fact that elements within the United States Intelligence Community once employed psychics as part of their intelligence efforts.

Intelligence officials had hoped to task their psychics to "flash forward" and catch a glimpse of the future.

Less is known about whether or not psychics continue to assist the authorities in their pursuit of new terror plots.

British journalist Jon Ronson, author of the psychic-army expose' THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS, was led to believe that the psychic "Jedi Warriors" "are back and fighting the War on Terror."

Ronson asked retired Major General Albert Stubblebine III, who once commanded INSCOM (the Army's Intelligence and Security Command) and a small group of psychic warriors at Fort Meade.

In 1983, members of that group had issued an alert about a plot to crash an airplane explosively into the U.S. Capitol Building.

"Are they back in business?" asked Ronson.

"I hope so," replied Stubblebine, who also expressed frustration at the exposure of the program by former members.

"I could wring some of their necks."

According to Ronson, Uri Geller, who had attracted serious interest at CIA in the 1970s, also hinted that the psychics were back in business.

Ronson also asked Skip Atwater, who had been involved in the previous government psychic spy program.

Atwater replied:

"I would suppose however, that since the years that I was privy to such information, these efforts have changed direction a bit and are now highly focused on counterterrorism."

The official US government speak for intelligence collection by psychics is called "remote viewing."

In keeping with the Intelligence Community trend to outsource special requirements, some suspect at least part of the psychic-spying business was moved into the private sector.

Jon Ronson expressed a similar opinion.

In his "goats" book  Ronson writes, "A number of  second-generation remote viewers (psychic spies who learned the trade from members of the Fort Meade unit, and subsequently set up their own training schools) were also contacted by the intelligence communities post 9/11."

In 2007, a source, known to have connections to persons from the Intelligence Community, shared unconfirmed information suggesting at least two old Soviet-era nuclear weapons had been smuggled into the United States and were being tracked as they were moved around the country.

According to the sources for this information, the alleged devices were no longer functional but still represented a serious threat. The same source also alleged intelligence had lost track of one of the devices, and was scrambling to locate it.

The source expressed a willingness to test the use of private remote viewing to locate the alleged device.

At the time, I was highly skeptical of the allegation. Various sources in the alternative media had been spreading rumors of "an American Hiroshima."

Checking with a few sources familiar with psychic perception phenomena produced little verifiable information.

Even the psychics seemed uncertain of their own bits and pieces of information.

I suspected that the threat had either fizzled into non-existence or had been fabricated.

The original source had cited the Department of Homeland Security.

One psychic source "remote viewed" the DHS and reported back that the only related impressions from DHS were "scenarios" of potential damage from nuclear attack, "winds etc. fallout effects or [a] dirty weapon. Property values, etc. damage to economy. Nothing on prevention. Just a drill?"

There was no psychic indication of any immediate threat from a nuclear WMD.

The original source of the information pressed for specifics:

"If you give me an answer I will send it to the proper USG people."

This time the psychic sources managed to produce new details and one even provided a specific location:

"Long Beach."

Fusing information from the psychic sources eventually predicted a "threat" to the Port of Long Beach associated with a "fire station" and the presence of numerous authorities.

Two years before the "psychic spies" reported on the threat to the Port of Long Beach, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff had pushed to reorganize the DHS to focus on the most serious threats, including the "American Hiroshima" scenario.

Unlike some of the second generation psychics mentioned by Jon Ronson in his book, the psychic sources that identified the fire station at Long Beach did not report an actual detonation of a nuclear device, but did report that July 2007 was the time frame of concern. A sketch provided by a psychic source appeared to match a suspect on the FBI's persons of interest watch list.

In July of 2007, an intelligence source to ABC News reported that a secret law enforcement report prepared for the DHS warned that al Qaeda had planned to carry out "a spectacular attack" during the summer.

DHS Secretary Chertoff told Fox News "We do not currently have any specific threat information that is credible about a particular attack on the United States."

Nevertheless, tensions were high due to attacks in London and Glasgow.

The psychic data had produced a few clear details about the alleged nuclear threat.

The target would affect the Port of Long Beach, a location with numerous fire stations.

Officials would be present, but it was uncertain as to their actual role.

Although a specific event had not been identified beyond the target location, the time frame of the psychic information was imminent: everything would be in place by July 4.

I was aware that the psychic information about Long Beach had passed through informal, but well connected channels. It was even possible that the psychic data had made its way into a threat assessment at DHS.

A small coincidence would only add to the mystery.

As the media reported on rumors of red-light warning bells passing through the government, Chertoff made an appearance at the Port of Los Angeles.

On July 21, 2007, The LA Times reported:

"Flanked by lawmakers and law enforcement authorities at a fire station at the Port of Los Angeles, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Friday unveiled a new strategy for the rapid resumption of trade after a terrorist attack at a major U.S. port."

As I read the LA Times, I realized the psychics had "coincidentally" identified Chertoff's appearance at a fire station. But what of "Long Beach" and the nuclear threat?

A few paragraphs later I had my answer.

"A nuclear explosion at the Port of Long Beach would immediately kill an estimated 60,000 people, expose 150,000 more to hazardous radiation and cause 10 times the economic loss from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to a report prepared a year ago by Rand Corp."
